Group rides are one of the best ways to meet fellow cyclists, discover new routes, and push yourself to ride further and faster. But if you've never joined one, it can feel intimidating. Here's how to prepare.
Find the Right Ride
Grand Rapids has group rides for every level. The Grand Rapids Bicycle Club offers no-drop social rides perfect for beginners. The East Grand Rapids Cycling Club hosts casual Sunday morning rides around Reeds Lake. For mountain bikers, WMMBA and West Michigan Trail Riders organize weekly trail rides.
Know the Etiquette
Group riding has unwritten rules: call out hazards (potholes, gravel, cars), don't overlap wheels with the rider in front of you, and maintain a steady pace. If you need to stop, signal and pull over safely.
What to Bring
Show up with a working bike, a helmet, water, snacks, and a basic repair kit. Arrive 10-15 minutes early so you can introduce yourself to the ride leader and get briefed on the route.
Be Honest About Your Ability
Don't overestimate your fitness. It's better to join a slower ride and feel comfortable than to struggle on a ride that's too fast. Most groups list their average speed — choose accordingly.
Have Fun!
Group rides are social events. Don't be afraid to chat, ask questions, and make friends. The Grand Rapids cycling community is welcoming and always happy to help newcomers.
