The Fred Meijer White Pine Trail is a 92-mile rail trail that stretches from Grand Rapids to Cadillac, passing through some of Michigan's most beautiful countryside. For beginners, it's an accessible and rewarding adventure — but a little planning goes a long way.
Trail Surface and Conditions
The trail is primarily crushed limestone with some paved sections near Grand Rapids. A hybrid bike, gravel bike, or mountain bike with wider tires is ideal. Road bikes with skinny tires may struggle on the gravel sections.
Where to Start
For a beginner-friendly ride, start at the Grand Rapids end and ride north toward Comstock Park or Belmont. The first 10 miles are well-maintained and offer a gentle introduction. You can turn around whenever you're ready.
What to Bring
Always carry: water, snacks, a basic repair kit (tube, pump, tire levers), and a phone. For longer rides, consider padded shorts and sunscreen.
Best Time to Ride
Spring through fall is ideal. The tree canopy provides shade in summer, and the fall colors are spectacular. Avoid riding after heavy rain as the limestone surface can become soft.
Planning a Multi-Day Trip
If you want to tackle the full 92 miles, plan for 2-3 days. Small towns along the route offer food, lodging, and resupply points. Reed City and Cadillac are popular overnight stops.
The White Pine Trail is a true Michigan treasure. Start small, build your confidence, and before long you'll be planning your own multi-day adventure!
